Is there someone in your life you can’t live without?
This is our Miss Kay.
We met in 2002 when she was my Bible Study Fellowship leader after we moved back to Yuba City. One of Bible Study Fellowship’s rules was you couldn’t talk about other books besides the Bible in class. Poor Miss Kay was always gently reminding me not to lose my focus since I kept forgetting and would bring up other books. I hardly knew Miss Kay when she came over and washed our toilets after my fifth baby was born, then she stayed in my life washing my world with her prayers, her desserts, and her love. Our kids think Miss Kay walks on water. Nobody cooks and bakes and prays like she does.
“Don’t write about me,” Miss Kay says, knowing I write about everything near and dear to me and Miss Kay is very near and dear. She edits my manuscripts and has been cooking for us for years. I’ve finally convinced her to join us here at Farming Faith to share some of her Louisiana kitchen tricks. She’s a born and bred southern belle, raised near New Orleans. I’m also hoping she’ll share her faith with us. Miss Kay is my go-to prayer partner. A woman of God who has taught me so much about what it really looks like to walk and talk with the Lord.
Miss Kay made Cami’s wedding cake, bakes cupcakes for the boys’ birthdays, then drives them to their school all decorated with bugs and blue frosting for the whole class to share. I’m not a cake person, but Miss Kay’s cakes are amazing. Moist and delicious, nothing you can buy in the store compares to her desserts.
I can’t tell you how many meals she’s made for us. After babies, and my breakdown, and the death of our dear ones, Miss Kay’s dinners have nourished us back to health and happiness. She also sews, crochets, and makes the cutest felt animals.
Miss Kay is a homemaker in every sense of the word. Her greatest skill is being present. When I drop by her house– a warm, welcoming sanctuary– she offers me tea and homemade soup and the sweetness of her company. Miss Kay really is the heart of her home.
Homemaking is becoming a lost art in America. Reading and knowing the Bible is even rarer. Miss Kay has taught me so much about these things. I’m thrilled she’s agreed to share recipes and some biblical devotions each week here at Miss Kay’s Corner which was formerly my recipe page.
The Bible says:
A good woman is hard to find,
and worth far more than diamonds.
Her husband trusts her without reserve,
and never has reason to regret it.
Never spiteful, she treats him generously
all her life long.
She shops around for the best yarns and cottons,
and enjoys knitting and sewing.
She’s like a trading ship that sails to faraway places
and brings back exotic surprises.
She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast
for her family and organizing her day.
She looks over a field and buys it,
then, with money she’s put aside, plants a garden.
First thing in the morning, she dresses for work,
rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started.
She senses the worth of her work,
is in no hurry to call it quits for the day.
She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth,
diligent in homemaking.
She’s quick to assist anyone in need,
reaches out to help the poor.
She doesn’t worry about her family when it snows;
their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear.
She makes her own clothing,
and dresses in colorful linens and silks.
Her husband is greatly respected
when he deliberates with the city fathers.
She designs gowns and sells them,
brings the sweaters she knits to the dress shops.
Her clothes are well-made and elegant,
and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.
When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say,
and she always says it kindly.
She keeps an eye on everyone in her household,
and keeps them all busy and productive.
Her children respect and bless her;
her husband joins in with words of praise:
“Many women have done wonderful things,
but you’ve outclassed them all!”
Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.
The woman to be admired and praised
is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.
Give her everything she deserves!
Festoon her life with praises!
