You serve what you love…
the thought sweeps through my mind as I smell the Jergen’s lotion rubbed into my hands in the church bathroom on Sunday morning. The scent of Jergen’s always reminds me of my grandma. She’s been gone a long time. Gone but not forgotten because of love and Jergen’s.
Grandma served what she loved. Her five grandchildren. Especially her two grandsons. I see Grandma rubbing Jergen’s lotion onto their sunburned skin. Those beloved boys of hers who worked the field tending the tomatoes our family sold in the summer back in those days.
The scent of Jergen’s takes me there in an instant. Back to summers thirty years ago at Grandma’s house. Through the lens of love it’s hard to believe it’s been that long. But love doesn’t forget.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you” says Isaiah 49:15. The Bible proclaiming God’s love for us.
Jesus came to love and to serve. The Lord’s life focused on healing us. Delivering us. Saving us. See? You serve what you love.
I know a person who serves their yard. A magnificent yard with flowers all over the place. That person is always in their yard. Watering it. Weeding it. Tending it. Loving it. Because if you love something, you will serve it.
I know men who serve golf.
Women who serve shopping.
Boys who serve soccer.
Girls who serve friends.
Not only does love serve
Love costs
not just money, but time.
Not just time, but effort.
Not just effort, but emotion.
Not just emotion, but life.
What you love costs you life.
Because your life
will become
what you serve.
